Interests & Memberships

Holyhead Harbour 2015

I was an Independent County Councillor on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council from May 2014 to May 2019.

I am a Director and the General Secretary / Company Secretary of the Genealogical Society of Ireland – a registered charity incorporated in Ireland and a Nominating Body for Seanad Éireann.

The Society is fully compliant with the Companies Act, 2014 and the Charities Act, 2009.

The Society was established in 1990 to promote the study of genealogy, heraldry and vexillology as open access educational leisure pursuits in Ireland and abroad amongst her diaspora.

I am the Editor of ‘Ireland’s Genealogical Gazette’ – the monthly newsletter of the Genealogical Society of Ireland and have published many articles in several journals on topics ranging from history, genealogy, vexillology, heraldry, Celtic languages, ethnicity and heritage to legislative and community development matters.

I am a member of a number of academic and specialist organisations as follows:

The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism at the London School of Economics.

The Guild of One-Name Studies based in the United Kingdom

The Society for the Study of Nineteenth-Century Ireland

Vexillology Ireland and Heraldry Ireland – both specialist branches of the Genealogical Society of Ireland

I am a member of the Project Team for the Irish DNA Atlas which is an academic research project undertaken by the Genealogical Society of Ireland in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

I am also a member of the following:

The Cross Avenue and Environs Residents’ Association.

I am supportive of many groups and organisations, including ones dealing with the Irish and other Celtic languages, Irish music, heritage and culture, the environment and, of course, social issues, education equality, workers rights and minority rights.
